Exploring CAM Use Among Women with Metastatic Cancer: Insights and Recommendations
Prevalence and Patterns of CAM Usage
Usage of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) among women with metastatic cancer. This study found that a majority of women with stage IV cancer use CAM, with herbal medicine being the most commonly used method. These women typically acquire knowledge about CAM from informal sources and rarely discuss their CAM use with healthcare professionals. Therefore, healthcare providers are advised to routinely inquire about CAM use among their patients and discuss the potential positive and negative effects.
The research also revealed that CAM use among cancer patients is often not communicated to doctors or nurses, which can lead to potential risks of undetected side effects. Only a small fraction of patients report side effects from CAM use, but this underscores the need for stricter monitoring. With the high prevalence of CAM use among women with cancer, healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, are encouraged to enhance their knowledge about CAM. Nurses can play a crucial role in providing education and guidance on CAM use to cancer patients.
Lastly, while there is no strong evidence that specific CAM methods can cause cancer development or cure, potential side effects are evident. Therefore, further randomized controlled studies are needed to gather more data on the effectiveness and safety of CAM use among cancer patients, especially those in advanced stages of the disease. With the increasing incidence of cancer, CAM use is expected to continue rising, emphasizing the importance of education and further research in this field.
