Improving Quality of Life in the Palliative Stage: Maintaining Hope with CAM
This article discusses the use of complementary and alternative therapies (CAM) by Chinese-speaking cancer patients, focusing on how CAM plays a role in their healing process. At the diagnostic stage, many patients feel anxious and begin integrating CAM to control and treat their cancer before starting conventional treatments. The most commonly used therapies are natural health products (NHPs), herbs from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and dietary changes to strengthen their immune system.
During the treatment stage, the primary goal of using CAM is to reduce the side effects of conventional cancer treatments and ensure the body can tolerate the entire course of treatment without delay. However, due to the risk of interactions with conventional treatments, many patients simplify their CAM regimen at this stage. After treatment is completed, patients use CAM to aid in recovery and return to normal life. In the palliative stage, CAM is used to improve the quality of life and maintain hope, with some patients using TCM dietary therapy to strengthen the immune system and maintain optimal health.
Overall, the article shows that the use of CAM by Chinese-speaking cancer patients changes throughout their disease journey and disease status. CAM is not used to replace conventional treatments but to complement them to achieve the best treatment outcomes. Thus, CAM plays an important role in providing hope and improving the quality of life for cancer patients at various stages of their illness.
