The Use of Traditional, Complementary, and Alternative Medicine in Cancer Care: Insights from Sri La

The use of traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine (TCAM) in cancer care reflects significant patient preferences. Many cancer patients turn to TCAM hoping for a cure, often influenced by advice from family and friends, as well as personal experiences. Common practices include Sinhala treatments, Ayurveda, and traditional religious practices. Conversely, some patients avoid TCAM based on doctor recommendations or beliefs in its ineffectiveness or interference with biomedical treatments.

Despite its popularity, TCAM raises concerns about patient safety, potential benefits, interactions with biomedical treatments, and delays in seeking conventional medical care. Research indicates that many patients try TCAM before consulting medical doctors, potentially delaying proper diagnosis and treatment. However, motivations for TCAM use vary widely, influenced by economic factors and difficulties accessing formal healthcare services.

In conclusion, while TCAM plays a significant role in cancer care, further research is urgently needed to explore patient decision-making processes and their perceptions of the benefits and limitations of traditional and biomedical treatments. This study highlights the importance of a holistic approach to healthcare, integrating TCAM and biomedical practices to comprehensively meet public health needs.
